4/13 – Foraging: Unearthing Nature’s Harvest – Brooklyne Wassel, University of Georgia – Connecting with nature and food is an interest that continues to grow in popularity for many following 2020. Though seemingly simple, there are keys to foraging safely, sustainably, and successfully that are important to protect both people and wildlife. Brooklyne Wassel, for the University of Georgia, will cover foraging safety, the basic principles of obtaining food from nature, and how to begin a wild harvesting journey.
4/20 – Sustainable Agriculture – Warren Love, Foodshed Alliance – Learn about the basics of sustainable agriculture, which is a set of farming practices that provides healthier food for people while protecting the environment and ensuring social equity. Warren Love from the Foodshed Alliance will discuss ways to support local, sustainable agriculture through your shopping and food choices.
4/27 – Sustainable Seafood, Explained: What the Science Says About How to Eat Earth Friendly – Max Mossler, University of Washington – Food choices have real environmental impacts, but those impacts are rarely as simple as we’re told. What are the tradeoffs between different foods, and where does seafood fit in? This talk will translate the science of sustainable seafood into plain English. You’ll learn how to make choices that are genuinely better for the ocean and the planet as a whole.
5/4 – Food Donations and New Guidelines – Jennifer Shukaitis, Rutgers University – Learn about how nonprofit organizations and grocery retailers follow food safety guidelines to make sure that food donated to worthy causes is stored and handled properly. You’ll learn more about these safety procedures and the State of New Jersey’s recently updated guidelines for donated food safety. Join us to learn about the changes and how you can prevent food waste and ensure food security for our neighbors.
5/11 – The Value of Bivalves: Learning About New Jersey’s Shellfish Aquaculture Industry – Dr. Mike Acquafredda, Rutgers University – Join us to learn about New Jersey’s shellfish aquaculture industry, including what species are farmed, how they are grown, and where these farms are located at the Jersey Shore. This presentation will also feature information about how bivalve farming improves our marine environments, supports our local economy, and contributes to a healthy and delicious diet.
5/18 – Fish Smart, Eat Smart: The New Jersey Recreational Fish Consumption Advisory Program – Dr. Dan Milleman, New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection – Join us to learn about the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s Fish Smart, Eat Smart program. This guide assesses potentially harmful chemical contaminants such as dioxin, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), pesticides and mercury, and provides consumption advisories for fish and crabs found in the state.
