The CDC released an update on avian influenza in dairy cows and people for May 10.
A few points:
- A single human case of H5N1 avian influenza was detected in a dairy farm worker in Texas in April; The patient reported eye redness as their only symptom, consistent with conjunctivitis, and recovered.
- As of May 10, H5N1 avian influenza has been detected at 42 diary farms in 9 states: Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Michigan, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Texas, and South Dakota.
- The CDC recommends personal protective equipment (PPE) for workers in close contact with infected livestock, testing, and reporting.
