This Spring’s talks:
4/14 – Forestry Success in the Pinelands – Benjamin Pisano and Dylan Wiget, NJ Forest Service – Learn about the history of biocontrols in New Jersey forestry and about a new project in the Pinelands. The Pinelands project has a component of variable density thinning to promote diversity, as well as road maintenance and fire breaks to provide wildfire relief and provide an action point for the Forest Fire Service.
4/21 – Plastic Reductions in NJ – N. Dini Checko, Association of New Jersey Environmental Commissions – Discover how the Get Past Plastic Law and new Skip the Stuff ordinances are driving real change. Learn about zero-waste efforts, reduced litter rates, and how increased public awareness is creating momentum for a cleaner, healthier New Jersey. Most importantly, find out practical steps you can take personally to reduce plastic use and be part of the solution!
4/28 – Ocean Observation along the Jersey Shore – Dr. Travis Miles, Rutgers University – Please join us to learn about the successes achieved by the Rutgers University Center for Ocean Observing Leadership (RUCOOL) to observe and understand the complex oceanography off New Jersey, and how results from their work have benefited fisheries science, weather and hurricane modeling, search and rescue, water quality monitoring, and so much more!
5/5 – Wildlife Recovery in NJ – Kathleen Kerwin, Wildlife Biologist – Wild turkeys were once extinct in New Jersey, while bald eagles and bobcats were almost completely lost due to issues including habitat destruction, overhunting and environmental contamination. Through reintroductions and intensive conservation efforts, all 3 species have made a comeback in New Jersey! Tune in to learn about the biology of these species, their decline and recovery, and the current status of their populations.
5/12 – Dam Removal/Restoration – Carl Alderson, NOAA – Join us as we explore the environmental and community benefits of dam removal. Our speaker will discuss how removing outdated or unnecessary dams can restore natural river ecosystems, improve water quality, and enhance biodiversity. Learn success stories from New Jersey and the positive impact of dam removal on local ecology.
5/19 – Shellfish and Marine Habitat Restoration – Dr. Christine Thompson, Stockton University, and Capt. Alek Modjeski, American Littoral Society – New Jersey’s marine ecosystems are critical to our coastal communities and economies. However, many stressors in recent decades have often resulted in the depletion of wild populations and degradation of habitats. Ongoing restoration efforts have been working to restore depleted populations and critical habitats. Please join us to learn about recent successes in shellfish restoration and habitat enhancement in coastal areas throughout New Jersey.
